About this home

GORGEOUS, ICONIC MANSION in historic Roanoke set back from the street on a hillside crest, corner lot w/6 bedrooms, 3+baths, carriage house & sweeping wrap-around front porch. Built over 100 yrs ago, this home features architecturally significant elements unique within a stately neighborhood bursting w/early 20th century design when it became the fashionable residential neighborhood for the city's prominent. Situated on an incredibly strong stone foundation w/still-ramrod-straight brick walls, this house has elements of Prairie style emphasized in the horizontal lines seen in the roof and porch overhang, further enhanced w/curved parapet wall dormers & stone coping. The two car detached garage has a hip roof w/hipped gables. Inside one enters into the gracious entry hall, w/a charming sitting room to the right, the formal & incredibly spacious dining room directly ahead, & the formal living room around to the left, all w/beautiful hand carved columns & woodwork. Grand staircase w/landings on each floor leads upstairs, paralleled by the old servants' stairs behind a wall. Just beyond the stairs is the kitchen w/an enormous butler's pantry, w/vintage copper counters leading to the dining rm. To the back of the kitchen is a back porch ideal w/gorgeous beadboard. The 2nd floor features the primary br w/ensuite bathroom & its own sunroom as well as a sitting rm, which could be a br on its own. 2 more brs & a bath round out the 2nd floor complete w/a linen closet stacked w/historic cabinetry. On the 3rd floor, one finds 2 bedrooms, a small kitchen & a bath. Basement is massive, dry, & full of potential. The picture book garage is just waiting for a makeover of the carriage house above. Has plumbing for an in-law suite, au pere's refuge or rental. This stunning home needs renovation, but many of the important things are there: the foundation is sound, as in the electrical(200 amp), the boiler and the plumbing. With a little work, would be in Architectural Digest.
